Focusing on the self-represented or "in pro per" client, my practice provides AFFORDABLE, QUALITY legal services to clients in need of professional oversight.  By providing most services via telephone consultation or email correspondence, overhead expenses are minimized, with the savings passed on to the client in the form of lower hourly legal fees. Realizing that there is a substantial percentage of clients who cannot afford hourly rates associated with traditional law offices, I strive to bring affordable, quality legal services to the average consumer.  Before, people who could not afford an attorney had to choose between "self-help" law books with no attorney guidance, often leading to costly mistakes.  I strive to work hand in hand, in a collaborative effort, with such clients, to assist them through the legal maze so they may accomplish their legal objectives in an affordable fashion.




                                                                                                                                                               

While there is a deliberate effort at the Law Office of Jenni Gustafson to keep legal costs down so that they are affordable to the "average" person, care is taken to ensure that quality is not affected. In order to help the client reduce legal fees, the Law Office of Jenni Gustafson utilizes a type of practice called: Unbundled Legal Services, Limited Scope Representation, or in laypeople's language: "a la carte".  This type of law allows the client to choose only those services that they feel they need legal assistance with, resulting in typically lower fees, as the client will be assuming partial responsibility for the case.  This type of practice has been approved by the State Bar of California, and is recognized as an innovative approach that should be encouraged because it brings affordable attorneys to the average consumer.  Of more importance, it provides a viable alternative to "self-help" law books.  If a layperson chooses to use a law book, this can be of assistance, as the layperson is more conversant in legalese and will have some familiarity and understanding of the legal process and how the courts work.  However, using a self-help law book without adequate supervision can result in costly mistakes, so the very attorney fees that the client tried to avoid are now exacerbated further by the client's mistakes. 

In addition to this "a la carte" approach to law, I have also been trained in Mediation, and value what is known as "ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION" rather than full-scale (costly) litigation.  In addition to the obvious financial costs associated with a litigated lawsuit, there are emotional costs as well. Limited Scope Representation, also known as Unbundled Legal Services, is encouraged by the State Bar of California as an affordable, effective alternative to traditional legal costs.  The below resolution is from the Board of Governors of the California State Bar’s May 19, 2009 meeting:

 

“RESOLVED that the (California) State Bar supports the expansion of limited scope legal assistance as part of the ongoing effort to increase access to legal services; that it is important to continue to identify ways in which attorneys can appropriately provide “unbundled” legal services to provide limited and specific services to litigants without undertaking full case representation;”

 

Sanctioned by the State Bar, Limited Scope Representation allows many individuals, who would otherwise self-represent (“in pro per”), to obtain affordable legal services.
